SCHOOL CLOTHING SHOP ASSISTANT

St Alban’s College invites applications for the position of School Clothing Shop Assistant. We are looking for a highly professional, meticulous, and customer-focused individual to play a key supporting role in our daily operations.

 

Job Summary

The School Clothing Shop Assistant plays a vital role in the daily operation of the school’s official uniform and merchandise shop. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service to students, parents, and staff, managing inventory, processing sales, and ensuring the shop is tidy, welcoming, and well-stocked. The ideal candidate will be friendly, organised, reliable, and possess strong communication skills.

 

Position: School Clothing Shop Assistant

Reports To: School Shop Manager

Contract: Full Time

Hours: Monday-Friday, 07:30 AM – 4:00 PM, and occasional events.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Customer Service and Sales:

 

Greet customers (students, parents, and staff) in a friendly and professional manner.

Assist customers with uniform and merchandise selection, ensuring proper fit, size, and adherence to school uniform policy.

Process sales and returns accurately using the Point-of-Sale (POS) system, credit/debit card, and internal account transactions.

Provide detailed knowledge of all products, pricing, school uniform regulations, and special promotions.

Handle customer inquiries, complaints, and special orders efficiently and courteously

Inventory Management:

 

Receive, unpack, and price new stock deliveries.

Organise and display merchandise clearly and attractively on shelves and racks.

Monitor stock levels and assist with conducting regular physical stock counts and reconciliation.

Identify and report low stock items, damaged goods, or discrepancies to the Shop Manager.

Assist with the preparation and fulfilment of online orders or internal departmental requests.

Shop Operations:

 

Ensure the shop is clean, tidy, and presentable always, including fitting rooms and storage areas.

Open and close the shop according to established procedures.

Adhere to all school policies and security procedures.

Operate and troubleshoot the POS system and basic office equipment (e.g., computer, printer).

 

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Maintain open and effective communication with the Shop Manager regarding operations, stock issues, and customer feedback.
  • Liaise with relevant school departments (e.g., Finance, Administration, Sport) as required for billing, event needs, or uniform policy clarification.
  • Assist with setting up and running pop-up shops or uniform sales during event periods (e.g., Sport days, old boys).

Additional Duties:

  • Ad hoc admin duties.

Second- Hand Shop:

  • Responsible for recording and sorting of all second-hand clothing.
  • Maintaining a stock list.
  • Recording of sales.
  • Attend to persons in the second-hand shop.
  • Ensure the second- shop is clean and well-organized.
  • The operating hours of the shop will be determined in conjunction with the school shop hours.
  • Give a monthly report summarising all transactions.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in a retail, customer service, or administrative role, preferably with POS system experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong basic mathematical skills and attention to detail for handling cash and inventory.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office/Google Suite).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move boxes, and navigate stairs/ladders as needed.
  • A professional, friendly, and patient demeanour, especially when interacting with boys and parents.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a school environment and Knowledge of uniform fitting and garment sizing.
