MSDS 2027 Applications Now Open
The 2026 Military Skills Development System (MSDS) application form for the 2027 intake is now available.
The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) offers young South African citizens a two-year voluntary service opportunity in the military, focusing on enhancing the deployment capability of the South African National Defence Force. Applicants must meet specific requirements, including age, citizenship, and educational qualifications, and will undergo training and evaluations. The application process includes submitting biographical information and supporting documents by the specified closing date.
The South African Defence Force, through its Military Skills Development System (MSDS), is offering young South African citizens an opportunity to serve in uniform on a two-year contract. The Recruits will receive military training and further functional training in their first year of service. During the second year of service, depending on the duration of the functional orientation, they will be deployed where needed and given opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop their skills.
Applicants should take note that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) does not have any online aplication system. Forms can also be obtained from the above offices
- Entry-Level / Privates: R15,000 – R17,000
- Corporals / Sergeants: R20,000 – R26,000
- Special Forces (Elite Units): R20,000 – R36,000 (base military pay)
- Lieutenants / Captains: R30,000 – R38,000
- Colonels / Brigadiers: R45,000 – R65,000
- Medical Officers (Military Doctors): R45,000 – R70,000
- A 13th cheque (annual bonus)
- State-subsidized medical aid (SAMHS) and pension fund contributions
- Housing and uniform allowances

- Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Age: Must be between 18 and 22 years old with Grade 12, or up to 26 years old if you have a completed tertiary qualification

- Tattoos: Must not have visible tattoos on the legs, lower arms, neck, or face.

- Submit Documents: Include your ID, CV, and Matric or tertiary certificates.
- First Year: Complete basic military training and functional skills.
- Second Year: Get deployed to apply your knowledge and develop skills. After two years, you can apply for a permanent position in the Regular Force or join the Reserve Force.
